Checking for lead pipes

Here are some simple ways to check if you have lead pipes:

  • Ask your neighbour: if your neighbour’s home has lead pipes, yours might too – especially if the two properties are of a similar age.
  • Scratch test: find the water pipe that runs from outside to your kitchen tap. It’s often under the sink, but can sometimes be in a garage or cellar. Unpainted lead pipes are dull grey and easily scratched, revealing a shiny, silver colour beneath.
  • Unusual bends: lead is very malleable and will often have irregular bends.
  • Speak to a plumber: if you are still unsure, ask a plumber for a second opinion.
