We’ve also partnered with top chef Mary-Ellen McTague (Aumbry) to give you some scrumptious low-fat recipes. As well as being brilliant for those watching their waist, cutting out the fat could also be good for homeowners’ pipes and the region’s sewer system as the average household pours an amazing 14lbs of fats, oils or grease from cooking down the drain each year!

Week 1 - Tacos

Mary-Ellen’s top tips for a tip-top low-fat roast?
Whilst it may seem counter intuitive to choose an already fatty joint of meat for a lower fat Sunday roast, there are several good reasons for doing so.

Firstly, the meat is self-basting as the fat runs through the meat, so no further fat needs adding to the roasting tray, and much of the natural fat in the meat is rendered from the joint as it cooks.

Secondly, once the meat is cooked and has extracted lots of lovely flavour from the fat around it, any remaining fatty parts are easily visible and can be trimmed off and discarded (in the bin!) so that you aren't actually eating it, whilst still benefitting from the flavour.

Finally, the fat that renders from your roast during cooking will be sufficient to roast your potatoes, removing the need for another roasting tin full of fat to roast your potatoes in.

Week 3 - Low fat chicken tikka massala

- Use as a pasta sauce with grated parmesan

- Top with mashed potato and bake for 30 mins at 180C

- Add kidney beans, 2 tsp cumin, 1 tsp ground coriander, 1 red chilli and finish with chopped fresh coriander and a squeeze of fresh lime juice. Serve with tacos or over rice with homemade guacamole.

- For lasagne, make a low fat béchamel with 50g olive oils, 50g flour and 200ml skimmed milk. Flavour with salt, pepper, mustard and a hard cheese such as parmesan or grana padano, layer meat, lasagne sheets and béchamel in a baking tin and bake at 180C for 45mins- 1 hour. Serve with green salad.
