A plant for the 21st Century

Davyhulme plan - image

Manchester’s population is set to grow over the coming decades, producing more wastewater. New environmental legislation means treatment standards are getting even higher. And the challenge of climate change means we all have to look at how we can use energy more efficiently. We need a treatment plant fit for the 21st Century.

In Summer 2015 we began work on the most ambitious modernisation programme in Davyhulme’s history.  This £200m scheme will completely replace some of the older parts of the treatment process with modern, controllable and efficient technology. It’s a three-year programme involving some major construction work but the end result will be worth it.

Progress So Far

Spring 2015- We had to remove some trees and vegetation and alter the profile of the ground in a number of areas around our site, removing some screening; don't worry, we'll be back to replace these towards the end of the project

Winter 2015- We had to break up some concrete on-site, construct and make way for some new buildings and structures; we realised residents were likely to hear some noise and feel some vibrations, so our staff monitored these levels regularly on site between working areas and customers' houses

Spring 2016- After preparing the working areas we may start pouring concrete to form new structures. This activity can be less predictable than some of our other work and could change our working times. Don't worry, we'll be speaking to nearby residents to provide plenty of notice.

What's Next?

As you can see, we're going to be quite busy!

Summer 2016- We'll be starting work to install and set up new machinery on site.

A new process to treat your wastewater will be introduced; we'll need to carry out some testing to make sure everything is working in tip top condition, but don't worry there won't be any disruption or impact to residents.

Once the new process is working, we'll be able to take the old process out of service.

We'll be carrying out tree planting and landscape reinstatement at different times throughout the project as areas become available and at the end of the project.
