Davyhulme - the biggest wastewater treatment works in North West England
Davyhulme is the biggest wastewater treatment works in North West England and one of the biggest in the UK. It drains the entire western side of Manchester, from Chadderton in the north to Bramhall in the south.
The works handles everything flushed away by 1.2 million people and businesses, including Trafford Park, the largest industrial park in Europe. Come rain or shine, the flows never stop.
The sewers that carry Manchester’s wastewater into Davyhulme are huge – in heavy rain the flows can reach more than 30,000 litres per second. That’s like 90 road tankers every minute! The site is manned 24 hours a day, every day, to make sure it meets strict environmental standards.
You can find out more about the treatment process here.
We have just embarked on a major modernisation project on site worth £200 million. It will be the biggest upgrade in the site’s long history, allowing the plant to continue to serve the people of Manchester and protect the environment for decades to come.
